During a long career associated with the film industry, I have studied painting regularly and developed my technique in my spare time. I have been interested in design and architecture, but painting has gradually become my major serious and rewarding interest. In recent years I have had the opportunity to spend concentrated periods in Cape Town, South Africa where I have had the time - and also found great inspiration - to evolve my work and produce my paintings and prints, developing and working on them further when I am back in London.
The portrait is my preferred 'landscape', I respond to people and love to observe the character of faces both young and old. I enjoy working in black and white as well as colour, it all depends on the image I work from and how it might enhance the portrayal of the person I am painting. Although it helps me to have met the subject of the painting, working from photographic likenesses has its benefits - I find it allows me time on my own later in the studio to focus and concentrate on the final resulting portrait without any distraction.
I would like to thank Michael Lancod and Ian Ellis, both at Putney School of Art. Michael for giving me inspiration and encouragement and Ian for persuading me, and my fellow students, to experiment with media and colour, pushing us into new areas.
Limited edition prints of my paintings are available, signed and numbered to 20, on 300gsm high grade paper, printed in the UK at Chaudigital of Clerkenwell, London or Art Assist in Cape Town, South Africa. They are unframed with at least a 30cm border.
